the new European packaging rules
The European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) was officially adopted in February 2025. From August 2026, these rules will apply directly in all EU member states. The impact on manufacturers, shippers and packaging users is significant. From that moment on, stricter requirements will also apply to your transport and bulk packaging.
the smart bulk packaging
The PPWR must make packaging more environmentally friendly and circular. This means the following, among other things:
- Packaging may contain a maximum of 100 mg per kilo of heavy metals and harmful substances.
- From 2030, at least 70% of the weight of packaging must be recyclable.
- Plastic packaging must contain a specified percentage of recycled material from 2030 (derived from consumer waste).
- Compostable packaging must demonstrably meet the correct standards.
- Packaging must be as light and compact as possible, without compromising safety or quality.
- Reusable packaging must be safe and usable multiple times without problems.
- From the end of 2028, all packaging in the EU will have uniform pictograms and logos, so that consumers can separate waste easily and correctly.
your preparation for the PPWR
Our Square Drums meet all requirements within the PPWR. They are made of strong, multi-layer kraftliner cardboard from renewable sources and are fully recyclable. Due to their square shape, you utilize up to 50% more space during transport and storage, which not only saves costs, but also meets the requirement to minimize empty space.
Moreover, the drums are lightweight, robust and suitable for various applications, from dry substances to dangerous goods (UN certified). Optionally, we can apply LDPE inliners that fit within future regulations.
the Square Drum: ready for the future
With our Square Drums you not only choose a practical and safe solution, but also packaging that aligns with the stricter European legislation of tomorrow. This way you prevent unnecessary costs and comply in time with the requirements set by the PPWR.
